If fortune favors the bold, why not go bold in the everyday? Say “yes” to daytime sequins, colorful shoes, look-at-me lipstick (or colorfully lined eyes and high-impact lashes) and make a statement this summer. While there are plenty of ways to add color to your routine, our current favorite is unexpected, bright blush. To help us wear this trend the right way, we caught up with professional makeup artist Katey Denno, who offered a few tricks of the trade.

Choose the Right Hue

If you’re overwhelmed by color options, Denno offers a helpful tip: “A bright blush should still be within the same color family as a shade you'd normally turn during a heavy workout. If you know your coloring is best with a pink cheek, don't waste your time experimenting with orange, terracotta or peach blush. Instead test fuchsia, hot pink, and even sheer purple shades.”

Go Easy with the Application

“For the majority of face shapes, bright blush should be applied just to the apples of the cheeks and blended well so there are no hard edges. Experiment with applying the pop of color a little higher up on the apple, but never apply a bright blush as you would a bronzer (along the cheekbone, sweeping towards the hairline). That’ll be overkill for sure!” Denno says.

Keep it Simple

To avoid looking clownish, keep the rest of your face fresh and simple. “For a daytime look, a couple swipes of mascara and a little under eye concealer can complete the look. Lips can remain neutral with a sheer tinted lip balm. For nighttime, a light reflecting sheer shadow can look fantastic on the eye, as would a smudgy black liner and a sheer lip gloss,” Denno suggests.

Ready to give this trend a try? Here are a four of our favorite bright blushes to get you started: Lancôme BLUSH SUBTIL in Tangerine Tint, Kat Von D Everlasting Blush in Lovesong, Maybelline New York Dream Bouncy Blush in Hot Tamale, and Giorgio Armani Blushing Fabric in Scarlatto.
