I am a real lover of fabric and can often be seen lurking around Sheehy’s in Dublin any given weekend. Last month, I spotted a beautiful roll of blue Toile de Jouy and kind of fell in love with it. It’s so beautifully delicate and the scene is quite mesmerizing. For those of you not too familiar with the term, Toile de Jouy is a pattern, usually a very detailed pastoral or historic scene printed in blue, red or black sitting on a white or off-white background. The patterns are commonly seen on fabrics, wallpapers and china and although it is noted that they were first produced in Ireland in 1750 (I didn’t know this until I started researching!), they quickly spread to France where they adopted the name Toile de Jouy. Toile is French for cloth and Jouy was after a town in northern France called Jouy-en-Josas where the fabric was mass produced in the 1760s. So what about toile wedding inspiration? The patterns would make a really beautiful addition to a wedding colour palette of powder blue and navy, especially if your venue already has furniture or upholstery. Subtle hints in addition to a colour scheme is the way to go here, maybe allowing for it through invitations and table settings or even your wedding cake like the image below. If you are doing mismatched bridesmaid dresses, having one of your bridesmaid’s dresses in a patterned fabric and the rest in block colours would work really well. Two is too much and will just date badly so be careful of where and how you use a pattern like this.
