Honeymoons in Africa: Safari vs Beach?

Honeymoons in Africa: Safari vs Beach?

Oh Africa. My most favourite place on earth, my passion, and the magical continent I spent two glorious weeks honeymooning with Mr B just over 2 years ago (boy, time flies!!).  In my opinion everyone should visit Africa at least once in their lives, but then I’m a little biased If this is a once-in-a-lifetime destination, then it stands to reason you might follow up your once-in-a-lifetime wedding honeymooning in luxury at some of Africa’s finest resorts.  Today we’re exploring the options with Mahlatini Luxury Travel, specialists in African honeymoons. Having personally travelled, lived and worked in the majority of Southern & Eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands their travel experts are well, really expert!  Your dedicated travel specialist will use their knowledge to help create your very own bespoke honeymoon, so whether you’re after romantic seclusion or sheer luxury, your honeymoon is tailor-made to suit you.

Let’s explore…

Kenya vs Seychelles

The home of the most famous African tribe, the Masai Mara in Kenya offers the worlds best safari experince.  The savannah’s boast some of Africa’s best wildlife, with massive herds of zebra, wildebeest and gazelle, large numbers of giraffe, elephant, buffalo and warthog, and of course the big cats – lion, cheetah and leopard.  In July / August and late November, you might be lucky to witness the spectacular Wildebeest Migration from the Masai Mara across the Serengeti in Tanzania.  For the ultimate romantic experience, a tented camp is a must.  Unlike any tent you have ever seen, this is the most luxurious way to stay in the heart of the action.  We stayed in the most amazing tented camp on honeymoon here, and it was the part I was most worried about (my hairdryer and straighteners practically had to be surgically removed from my hand…).  Fear not, the bed was probably the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in, and the ‘bush shower’ was just wow!!

One of the most unspoilt and remote locations on earth, the Seychelles evokes visions of pure romance.  The endless white sandy beaches, clear turquoise waters and unforgettable sunsets make this one of the most popular honeymoon choices.  Travel is safe and easy, and outside the main cultural hubs of Mahe and Praslin, the smaller resorts of the outer islands provide perfect seclusion, peace and tranquillity coupled with 5* service.

Tanzania vs Zanzibar

If you dream of endless rolling plains and rusty orange sunsets, great herds of wildebeest and prides of hunting lions, the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is your ideal honeymoon location.  Again, tented camps offer the most romantic of accommodation, luxuriously furnished and often boasting a top chef, many camps offer plenty of activities and experiences to complete your trip – whether just a few days or a few weeks!  There’s candlelit dinners, massages in open-sided tents to the song of the bush (try this – we did – amazing!) and hot air balloon safaris followed by a champagne breakfast and sunset cocktails with your own personal Masai guide.  With a number of smaller parks too, Tanzania offers the added bonus of exploring different habitats and diversity of this beautiful country.

The Spice Island of Zanzibar combines African culture and Eastern style in a beautiful combination of history and promise.  The UNESCO world heritage site Stone Town offers an amazing cultural and architectural tour, while walks through the spice farms of the forest are filled with the heady scents of vanilla, cinnamon, cloves and pepper.  Visit the rare, and not so cuddly, Zanzibar Red Colobus monkey in the Jozani Forest, or swim with dolphins in the crystal clear waters along the coast.  For the more adventurous, the island offers numerous watersports and world-class diving spots, while the nearby islands of Pemba and Chobe offer a secluded eco-tourist experience.  This was our second stop on our honeymoon, and we loved the hint of the East combined with laid-back and friendly African people.  5* resorts, blue flag beaches and friendly service made it one of our all time favourite destinations.

South Africa vs Mauritius

My second home, and one of the most diverse nations in Africa, South Africa is home to some of the more established game parks and private game reserves.  If you’re looking to combine beach, city and safari on your honeymoon then this is the ideal place.  Safari accommodation is less tented camp and more luxury lodge, with swimming pools and viewing decks, for a less rustic experience.  Here you can venture through the bush on walking safaris and night drives, even walking with the lions!  The Kruger Park, in the north of the country (1 hour flight or 3 hour drive from Johannesburg) boasts the widest selection of wildlife, whilst smaller private reserves in the South offer affordable luxury if you want to experience the cosmopolitan vibe of Cape Town too.

Idyllic Mauritius offers everything from pure relaxation to unbridled adventure; spa’s, golf courses, cruises and more.  For added romance book a private tour.  The ultimate activity here though must be the helicopter tour, giving you a birdseye view of this castaway island! Whilst a truly African nation, the island has also been influenced by the Europeans, France and Holland mainly, creating a diverse and friendly culture.
