” Leafy with love banks and the green waters of the canal...”

I could not get Patrick Kavanagh’s Canal Bank Walk out of my head putting the images of this wedding together. I think it may have been the “green and blue things” that abound in the decor and the general sense of lushness that pervades this island, because today we visit São Miguel- also know as the “Green Island.” São Miguel is the largest of the Azores islands, an archipelago off the west coast of Portugal. Couple Jeremy and Carolina are both architects who met in Paris and live in London. They travelled to São Miguel to celebrate in this unspoiled region with a simple ceremony. A small number of family, friends and the excellent Mademoiselle Fiona came along to help celebrate.

The couple kept decor organically natural looking yet elegant, taking their inspiration from the surrounding island scenery and vegetation. Carolina is originally Portuguese with a laid back yet bubbly personality, and Mademoiselle Fiona sought to create a sense of this in her images. “I wanted to capture the beautiful surroundings and some elements from the bride’s cultural background that made this wedding so exotic yet personal- such as the lush nature, the Portugese azulejos (typical blue and white tiles), the iconic blue hortensia/hydrangea flowers, the volcanic stone church, the old stone mill, etc.”  On the wedding morning the three of them set out around the streets of Ponta Delgada for an improvised portrait session which was relaxed and fun. Their ceremony later in the day took place in an old convent, with cocktails in the cloisters nearby afterwards. Simple and laid back was the order of the day and by the sounds (and looks!) of it, they really pulled it off.
