A Rustic DIY Outdoor Farm Wedding in the Lake District

A Rustic DIY Outdoor Farm Wedding in the Lake District

As a Friday treat I have another beautiful wedding to share with you this afternoon. YAY.

Philippa and Graham chose to hold their wedding in June and were blessed with sunshine which was perfect for their outdoor ceremony at Philippa’s parents farm. They then moved on to a village hall reception, all held in the Lake District.

They wanted a rustic relaxed party which was fun. Many of their loved ones helped to contribute to their DIY efforts, with a DIY brooch bouquet, pom poms, home made pavlova wedding cake and pretty blooms. Perfection.

Thanks so much to the wonderful Jenna Carpenter for sharing her photographs with us today.

The Proposal… On Philippa’s 30th birthday; I had organised a afternoon tea and pimms party in the garden at my parents farm and had invited about 50 family and friends. Graham had been really busy working all week so had convinced me he hadn’t been able to get me a present yet as he hadn’t had time, which my mum and dad went along with. Then about 15 minutes before everyone was due to arrive (apparently Graham had wanted to do it earlier but in his words I’d been ‘faffing’ – in my words I was getting everything ready for the 50+ people coming round!) he said could I just go down to the orchard in front of the house with him to chill out for 5mins. He had hidden the ring behind a tree there and proposed to me – to which I said yes! After I’d stopped crying, we went back up to the house where my parents were waiting to hear the answer – apparently Graham had asked for my dad’s permission the week before so they already knew. So we told them I’d said yes, to which my mum replied ‘that’s a good job, it would of been a really pants party if I’d said no!’ Then everyone started to arrive so it turned into a birthday/engagement party! (There are some photos of myself and the bridesmaids and my dad taken under the same tree with the lake in the background).

The Vision for the Day… Rustic/vintage party within the beauty of the lakes with lots and lots of fun! We wanted to share somewhere we loved and being outdoors, and wanted everyone to be relaxed and just have a fun day.

The Planning Process… 1 year DIY process, with lots of help from family and friends. We knew we wanted to get married on Phil’s parents farm, and after a lot of logistical planning, making and creating stuff (plus a mood board created mainly by Graham!) we just had to hope that the sun would come out on the day…..

Budget… Around the 8 grand mark.

The Venue… In a field on Philippa’s parents farm on the shore of Loweswater Lake in the Lake District, followed by a reception in Loweswater Village Hall.

The Dress + Accessories… Dress by Anoushka G (Katrina) modified to have it’s sleeves removed (lace from sleeves then used in the bouquet, wrist corsage and hair piece). Shoes by Irregular Choice (Park Lane in blue). Pearl earrings and necklace (borrowed from mother of the bride). Handmade brooch, button and silk flower bouquet made by the bride. Flowery wellies for walking and paddling in the lake!

Finding the Dress… Took a couple of months and several shops, new I wanted something vintage, lace, not sleeveless and not very big but not many dresses like that out there (usually too big!) Finally found the dress in I Do at Cockermouth (a small town near my parents) where it was half hidden by all the other bigger dresses. It was the first time I had managed to go shopping with someone else and had my mum and one of my bridesmaids Penny there. It was my mum that first picked it up, I tried it on and both my mum and Penny said yes. So I then tried on about 10 other dresses just to make sure, but then put it back on and they said yes again. As I am indecisive I didn’t but it straight away, but the shop put it aside for me and when I went away and thought about it I new I wanted it so went back a few days later and bought it!

Groom’s Attire… Laid back rustic – charcoal waistcoats from Tom English with all the men in different flowery, stripy or checked shirts. Open collar with unmatching grey trousers!

The Readings + Music… No music as in a field. Reading by bride’s friend Caroline – “Us Two” by A.A. Milne, a poem from Winnie the Pooh book Now We Are Six (which the bride had when she was little and wouldn’t go to bed until it had been read to her – brides parents needed tissues after that!)

Beautiful Bridesmaids… Blue Valentina dresses from Monsoon and matching pink wellies.

The Flowers… Bouquet was made by the bride using brooches, buttons and silk flowers. Bride had real flowers in her hair, and bride and bridesmaids had real flower wrist corsages to match their dresses. Men had thistles and herbs – all made by family friend Judith Jarman. A few bought in statement flowers were mixed with hand picked flowers and arranged by friends in jam jars and jugs.

The Cake… 7 tier pavlova (Graham’s favorite dessert) made by the groom’s mum. Cake topper from Extra Mile Icing near Malton shows groom in mountain biking gear and bride in rugby gear with a veil and carrying a bouquet and rugby ball!.

Your Photographer… The lovely Jenna Carpenter.

The Details + Decor… Lots and lots of bunting and tea lights. Paper pompoms and a willow arch at the field. Sit down afternoon tea for the wedding breakfast. Fish and chip van in the evening (both from Katy Edgar Catering), followed by homemade cheesecake by the bride’s mother, a cheese board, a doughnut tower and a sweetie buffet – plus the pavlova cake! Local beer ‘Loweswater Gold’ from Cumbrian Legendary ales. Glasses as favours with ‘Philippa & Graham Chadwick’, the date and an etching of the view of the lake on them. A bouncy castle for the kids, plus giant garden games such as jenga, connect 4, bowls etc. A home made photo booth with fancy dress……basically we just wanted everyone to have fun!

The Honeymoon… Minimoon at Slaley Hall at Hexham, planning main honeymoon somewhere hot in winter.

Memorable Moments… Walking through the woods with all the guests – the bluebells were still out as they were late after the cold spring so the whole area was a carpet of blue and smelt wonderful. Then everyone had fun playing Pooh Sticks and skimming stones, and there are some great photos.

Advice for Other Couples… Don’t get too stressed about all the little details, you won’t even notice on the day and still have an amazing time.
