We know we are not alone in thinking, “Um, excuse me, it’s already the second week of October?!” Around here, that realization is met with amazement but also a frantic realization that we need to figure out our Halloween costumes ASAP. If you’re a beauty-obsessed gal with an abnormal amount of magazines stacked bedside and a borderline-unhealthy addiction to Pinterest (not naming any names here…) Halloween inspiration is endless. The problem is, while we’re continually inspired, sometimes an idea falls flat in execution and ends up looking scary (in the wrong way).

Here at MDC, we’re taking our Halloween inspiration this year from iconic beauty looks of decades past. Follow along this week as we reveal glamorous looks from the 1920’s, 1950’s and 1960’s, culminating in a fantastic holiday giveaway you won’t want to miss! To help us see our Halloween concepts come to life seamlessly, we enlisted two of our favorite makeup artists to give us step-by-step guides to nailing the looks like a pro.

First up, professional makeup artist Tara Shakespeare for Contour Fossa Makeup & Hair gave us the rundown on how to create an endlessly chic 1920’s look. Pair this with your best drop waist frock for your own interpretation of Gatsby glam.

How To: 1920’s Makeup

1. Prime and moisturize the face.

2. Apply foundation to face.

3. Using concealer, cover up any spots or blemishes.

4. Apply Yves Saint Laurent Terre Saharienne Bronzing Powder in Terre Ambree to the cheeks to highlight, and dust Yves Saint Laurent Blush Radiance in Poppy Coral on the apples of your cheeks for a subtle flush.

5. To nail this smoky eye, apply the darkest shadow in the Yves Saint Laurent Pure Chromatics Wet and Dry Eyeshadow Classy Palette over the entirety of the lid, then line and blend the lower lash line with the same hue.

6. Line the eyes with a waterproof black liner on the upper and lower lash lines.

7. Apply Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Baby Doll in Fetish Black to the upper and lower lashes.

8. To master the perfectly 20’s lip, apply concealer to the lip as a primer, line the lips, then apply your color with a lip brush. The beautiful burgundy above is Yves Saint Rouge Pur Couture in Prune Avenue.

9. To top off this gorgeous makeup, paint your nails a deep saturated color—we love Yves Saint Laurent La Laque Couture in Sepia 7E Art.

 

How To: 1920’s Hair

1. Spritz hair with a thickening product or mousse and part hair to one side with a comb.

2. Spray a heat protectant on your hair to protect it from the heat.

3. Pull hair back into low ponytail leaving two sections of hair out in the front—one section falling over each ear.

4. Using a 1 inch curling iron, roll hair onto the iron (away from your face). Hold for a few seconds and then pull the hot iron out of the curl keeping the curl intact. Pin the curl to your head as it cools.

5. Continue the step above, forming curls about an inch thick cascading down each side of your part, pinning the curls as you go along.

6. Take the hair in your ponytail (while front sections are pinned) and form a low, twisted side bun.

7. Pull pins out of curls and brush out gently.

8. On the side of your part that has more hair, pull your hair forward and form a half moon shape on the side of your head. Slide a pin into your hair to hold it in place.

9. Continue to alternate this step, forming an “S” or a snake shape on the side of the head. Do this on both sides of your part.

10. Wrap the remainder of the brushed curls around the twisted bun and pin.

11. Spray curls down with hairspray to make them as flat as possible.
