how to remove halloween makeup

King sized candy bars. Clever costumes. Crazy makeup. Good times with friends. Ahhh, isn’t Halloween the best? We all know the fun has to stop at some point and for some of us it isn’t uncommon still to feel like a zombie the morning after you put your alter ego back in the closet. In that moment you look in the mirror and realize that the goblins stole your glow what do you do?! No fear my boo’ties (get it?)!  Here are some easy “tricks” and tips on how to “treat” those Halloween “Boo’s.”

When You Get Home Tonight

Yes, it’s been a long night. Yes, you’re exhausted. No, you should not go to bed with your makeup on. Spend the ten minutes to take the makeup off your face before hitting the pillow. This would be a great time to bust out the Clarisonic that’s been sitting in your cabinet and give your skin a deep cleanse. First, try wiping your face with makeup wipes then cleanse with a gentle cleanser before using the Clarisonic (the last thing you want is to push the makeup deeper into your skin so make sure you at least take off the top layer of gunk). I know it seems like a lot of cleansing, but trust me, that makeup is caked on and the last thing you want is to clog your pores.

Next, use an alcohol free toner to take off any excess oil or makeup residue that your cleanser did not completely take off. A toner will also provide extra hydration and refreshment to your skin before you add your serum and night cream.

To avoid an eye infection, make sure you use a cotton ball and a good eye makeup remover or Vitamin E oil to take off your mascara and eye shadow.

The Morning After

Your dermis is definitely going to be dehydrated especially from all the “boo-ze” from beer pong the night before. What happens is that the subcutaneous fat under the skin starts to dry up and, consequently, the skin starts to look sallow and dull. Show your skin a little love and use a hydrating facial mask or head to a spa for a professional facial. Try not to wear makeup for the next couple of days and allow your skin to breathe.

Getting less than 8 hours of sleep is going to show the most in your eyes. The skin underneath your eye is the thinnest part of your body and the most delicate so it’s imperative that you keep that area hydrated with an emollient eye cream that specifically targets dark circles and puffiness.

MDC Recommendation: Vichy LiftActiv Serum 10 Eyes & Lashes is a fave among the editors in the office.

Obviously, water is an extremely important element in the healing process for your skin and will aid in flushing out all the built up toxins that result in loss of radiance. Also, don’t neglect the skin on your body! Take a warm bath with olive oil to replenish your skin’s moisture and even apply the olive oil to your face and scalp as a mask for a couple of hours, washing it out with a gentle, non-soap cleanser.

The bottom line is this: one night of candy, booze and crawling in at 3:00 AM is not going to kill you (okay, that’s the last Halloween reference, I promise). Just be sure to give your skin a little extra love post Hallow’s Eve.
