Hats are having a moment. From beanies to baseball caps to floppy hats, every street style snap we pin and Instagram picture we double tap seems to boast one thing: awesome headwear. No matter what your hat of choice happens to be this fall, they all present the pestering predicament of hat hair. Once the chic accessory comes off it’s wham-bam-flat-to-your-head-hair that seems impossible to salvage. To help us deal with the crippling consequences of our sartorial choices, we enlisted the advice of professional hairstylist—and MDC contributor—Zachary Rej Morad for his tips on how to master hat hair.

Accentuate, Don’t Hide

“I think women use hats to hide their hair too often. They are a great way to complement an already gorgeous hairstyle,” Morad suggests. When choosing how to style our strands we like to consider the vibe of our outfit and also the width of the hat. Because they’re close to the head, beanies look great with straight, undone strands, while wide-brimmed, floppy hats look particularly chic with voluminous, loose waves.

Bring Dry Shampoo

Unfortunately, there may come a time when your style statement needs to come off (think restaurant, evening out, etc.). If you’re left with flattened, matted, slightly sweaty strands, Morad recommends you pull out our most beloved wonder product: dry shampoo. Stash a travel-size bottle in your purse on hat days, and spritz the product at the roots of your hair before combing gently.

Here’s a roundup of some of our favorite dry shampoos, plus how to use them like a pro.

Bend and Fluff

Consider it the MDC version of Elle Wood’s bend and snap—the bend and fluff: “if you’re in a bind and don't have any dry shampoo, just flip your head upside down and use your fingers to rough up the roots and work the 2nd day hair look!” Morad says. If you have a comb or brush on hand, you can also backcomb your roots for some extra volume.
