How to: Pick the Perfect Red Lipstick for Your Skin Tone

Red lipstick is one of the most classic—and coveted—makeup items, but if you’re still searching for your perfect shade, you’re not alone. As a professional makeup artist, I often have clients tell me that choosing the right red lipstick can be an overwhelming and complicated experience. But following three key steps before you purchase is all you need to make it a success. Here are my tips in how to choose the perfect shade of red lipstick, anytime!

1. Know your skin tone: Skin comes in all unique colors and tones, and we spend most of our time trying to find makeup and accessories that complement. If you have fair skin and have pink undertones in the skin, opting for a cooler blue based red would be the ideal choice. If you have a more olive skin tone and warmer colors look best on you, try a red lipstick that has orange undertones. Not sure about lipstick undertones? Ask the expert at the counter to point you in the right direction.

2. Test different formulas: When it comes to finding the perfect shade of red, take your time and relax a little. It is not supposed to feel or be stressful, and the best decisions are made off of successful research. Test sheer formulas if you’re feeling shy and bold formulas if you want to make a strong statement. See what you feel most comfortable in. Red comes in varying pigments, so there is always something new to try.

3. Get a second opinion: Not sure if you are making the right choice? Ask a trusted friend or makeup artist what they think of the lipstick you want to purchase. Makeup artists always are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to products and what looks good. A friend will give you an honest opinion of how good or bad it looks, and might help you along in the decision making process more swiftly.
