1960s Mod Northern Soul Wedding | Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

WWW readers Caroline and Scott have a love of the 1960s and are into mod and northern soul, so it was only fitting that they injected that into their wedding day.

They chose to marry at the striking Stockport Town Hall followed by a reception at Victoria Baths, Manchester. They had some wonderful DIY touches to their décor, with home made bunting and sweet picket fencing. I adore the divine florals and china effect cake too.

Caroline had 2 vintage original 1960s dresses, a long gown for the day and a short frock for the evening, I especially love her plaited bun do adorned with pearls. Scott meanwhile was suited and booted mod style in a bespoke suit. Amazing.

Thanks so very much to Sansom Photography for sharing their brilliant photography with us today.

THE PROPOSAL | Scott planned an amazing surprise for me, which involved a beautiful day travelling across the country on the Northern Belle train, which recreates the luxury and period style of the Orient Express. He asked me to marry him under a bandstand in the grounds of Blickling Hall in Norfolk, which was the final destination of the train. The ring matched perfectly the art deco feel of the day as it dates to the 1920s!

THE VISION | We were both quite harmonised in what we wanted for the day as we have such similar interests and passions. We love the 1960s and are very into the northern soul and mod scene so knew this would guide the style of the day. We really wanted to feel relaxed and for our guests to have the best experience possible so we prioritised music and entertainment, and also tried to cram in as many things to see and do as possible so that everyone felt they'd had more than the 'usual' wedding experience. We wanted the day to be about our love for each other but also our love for the people who give so much to us.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | Planning is far less exciting once you get past listing everything you want and then work out what you can reasonably afford! Scott is a project manager by day and spoke a lot about gant charts and spreadsheets but actually did little of the planning as it turned out! Having spent hours trawling wedding blogs I had my ideas together from quite early on, which really helped. One thing I would recommend is actually doing a seating plan very early on - sounds mad but I actually found it helped me to formalise the guest list and also to more easily visualise the day.

THE VENUE | We were very greedy and had two venues! Our ceremony was in the Committee Room at Stockport Town Hall which is apparently not often used for wedding ceremonies but which we loved for its stained glass windows and beautiful wood panelling. Our reception was held in the magnificent Victoria Baths in Manchester, which really is a diamond in the rough. The whole interior and architecture suited the vintage feel we wanted and they very kindly entertained our guests by taking them on a tour of the building while we had our photographs taken. Its myriad rooms meant everyone had a lot to explore and we were able to offer our guests a cinema room, photobooth and sweetie cart! When we booked the baths they'd only had three weddings previously but I'm so pleased to hear that they are well booked for the next two years - it really is great to know that the money we spent is helping preserve such a stunning and significant space.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My shoes were LK Bennett, dress was vintage 1960s, pearl bracelet was a gift from my sister on the morning of the wedding and the clip in my hair was a last minute addition! The hairdresser wanted to put something in but I hadn't bought anything so she rushed out to a charity shop in Manchester and came back with a huge ring and a string of pearls - what you see in my hair is the result and I have to say it totally made the outfit and looks great in all the pictures!

FINDING THE DRESS | I knew I wanted an original 1960s dress as I'm such a fan of the era and tend to wear vintage anyway. I actually ended up with two dresses and decided to keep one long for the ceremony and make one mini for the evening reception. I found one on Etsy and one on Ebay and after a few alterations to both they ended up exactly as I wanted. The dress I wore down the aisle was the biggest bargain of the day....£40!

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Now, most brides will shudder at what I am about to say but Scott's suit cost more than the whole of my outfit put together! As a mod, sharp tailoring is everything and we both wanted him to have the amazing experience of getting a bespoke suit made by one of the original mod tailors - a lovely man called George who's based in Leeds. He also had a shirt handmade and wore Loake brogues, which are a mod staple and great for dancing because they have leather soles!

THE READINGS & MUSIC | I came down the aisle to an instrumental version of The Verve, 'Bittersweet Symphony' and we pretty much danced out the wedding to Jackie Wilson, 'Your Love is Lifting Me Higher'! During the ceremony we were lucky to have two talented friends (both called Natalie) to entertain everyone. One read John Cooper Clarke's 'I Wanna Be Yours' while the other sang with the help of her ukulele - Roberta Flack, 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', which was a surprise from her, and Richard Ashcroft, 'C'mon People We're Making It Now' which was Scott's choice. Our first dance was choreographed to an old soul record by Eddie Bo called 'From this day on'. Unbeknown to us, our friend who DJ-ed at the reception had got hold of an original 45 of the song which we danced to, he played it for our dance and then had it framed for us as a wedding present.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Our bridesmaid was my best friend from university, Sally. We've been friends for many years and it only seemed right that she was part of the wedding as she is almost like family. It's not totally obvious in the photographs but Sally actually broke her ankle two weeks before the wedding and was on crutches on the day but soldiered down the aisle like a pro! The dress she wore was a last minute change as she was meant to wear a short sixties number. I cannot even express my gratitude to Etsy seller OopsyGirl who saved the day by shipping the replacement dress so quickly from America. In many ways it was fate as it fitted perfectly and looked fantastic!

THE FLOWERS | The flowers were arranged by Blossom florists in Manchester. The theme was English country garden so lots of hydrangeas, peonies and roses. Erygnium thistles were used throughout to connote both of our Scottish roots and a guest kindly dried them out for us to keep after the wedding. They also dried out some of the rose petals from my bouquet, which is such a lovely reminder of the day.

THE CAKE | I cannot even begin to describe how delicious the cake was! It was made by a friend of a friend who bakes as a sideline to her full time career so it was also a bargain! I had always wanted a cake that looked like Wedgewood china and the result was perfect. The cake was a devils food cake infused with raspberry essence with a chocolate Grenache and crushed raspberries centre. We got the cake topper on Etsy from a seller called MelaboWed who creates the most whimsical and beautiful toppers. It was definitely a talking point as people know how much we both love monkeys!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | What can I say, the pictures speak for themselves! Chris and Verity of Sansom Photography were recommended to us by a friend of a friend who had actually photographed their wedding. The whole experience of working with them was amazing including the engagement shoot, which really got us excited for the main event! They really put us at ease and captured perfectly the day we had. We were willing to pay a bit more for great photographs and based on how often I look at them I know this was money well-spent!

THE DETAILS & DECOR | Much of the décor was crafted by me including the masses of bunting you can see in the pictures - a true labour of love! The baths are so beautiful it didn't take much to make them look spectacular but I think our choice of furniture (which was hired) and my idea of zoning the space so it felt less huge worked really well. We especially had compliments on the use of fencing to create a bar area which guests were calling the 'Garden of Salvation'...which translates as 'a great place to chill out after too much champagne!'

CATERERS | As our wedding was off-site we had to arrange outside caterers to provide all the food at the wedding reception although we were lucky enough to be able to provide the wine and arrival cocktails which saved our budget. Herb & Spice were great to deal with - really friendly, high quality and absolute professionals on the day. We're really pleased to hear that the baths have added them to their vendors list as they worked so hard on the day and were incredibly respectful of the building. We had many compliments on the food and rightly so, it was delicious!

THE HONEYMOON | We knew the wedding would be once in a lifetime so wanted the honeymoon to also reflect this. We toured a few different places in the Far East taking in the glamour of Singapore, the relaxation of Langkawi, and the fast pace (and amazing food!) of Penang. We were made to feel very welcome and stayed in some truly beautiful hotels. Special to me, we were also able to enjoy cocktails overlooking the Singapore skyline with one of my oldest friends who lives there and had never met Scott. Special to Scott, we were able to get his wedding suit, which fitted so perfectly, remade in a different fabric by a tailor in Penang. The honeymoon really was everything... glamorous city break, beach holiday and cultural adventure.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | We had a great time travelling between our venues on some vintage buses while enjoying some champagne! Everyone was really high-spirited and it was a talking point ... and great photo opportunity. The speeches were also especially fantastic - not always the case at weddings. Some guests are still talking about them now, particularly an anecdote involving Scott, a bath, and a desire to get back at his brother!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Focus on you as a couple, what you love and what you enjoy. You can't please everyone's tastes but if what you do is from the heart, people can't fail to enjoy themselves at your wedding.
