Colourful Spring Zelda Pub Wedding | Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

I so love an individual couple who put their personalities into their wedding day; which is exactly what WWW readers Claire and Mark did. They married on the 12 April 2014 at a registry office in Camden, London followed by a pub reception.

They wanted a Spring feel to their day, with bright colours, pretty blooms and great music.

Claire looked stunning in her purple tea length dress by Oh Sew Vintage with statement Irregular Choice shoes, while Mark donned a grey Reiss suit with colour pop tie. There were fun details inspired by the Zelda video game, wooden flower bouquets and scrummy looking cakes. Brilliant.

Thanks so much to Marianne Chua for sharing her beautiful photographs today.

THE PROPOSAL | While were on holiday in Istanbul in November 2012. I was sulking about turning 30, Mark decided to take my mind off it... I was quite surprised and didn't believe him at first.

THE VISION | We wanted something fairly casual, with plenty of good food and great music, definitely nothing too formal or fancy. We're quite a private couple so wanted a simple civil ceremony and then to get on with the party! Spring is my favourite season so I wanted to embrace the bright colours, with lots of spring flowers, colourful bunting and plenty of DIY decorations. We didn't want a sit down meal, instead opting for prosecco afternoon tea and then a rustic buffet in the evening.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | After the engagement sat around for a few months, then realised we should probably look for venues. We had to discard quite a few based on the price being pretty much our entire budget.... then happened across a lovely pub with a lovely landlady, and we were sold! The bargain hunting and the crafting then began.

THE VENUE | We knew we wanted a central London registry office, so Camden seemed like the perfect choice. Plus, it was handily down the road from our reception venue, the Blue Lion pub on Gray's Inn Road. The landlady Cheryl was so helpful and accommodating from the beginning, dealing with my emails full of questions and even making me feel calmer when I was having a panic! The pub ticked all our boxes - a decent sized space for our reasonably small wedding, tasty food made from local produce, the flexibility to produce a menu we liked and decorate how we saw fit, and most importantly, no horrible carpets.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I had a mantra for many years: "If I ever get married, I'll wear purple". I wasn't sure I ever would get married, so I had to stick to it. I knew I didn't want a long dress either - I wanted to dance the night away! I found Emma of Oh Sew Vintage while browsing the web one day, and her reproduction vintage, 50s style dresses looked perfect. I dragged my poor bridesmaids around Goldhawk Road for a day, searching for the perfect fabric, and finally found the silk and lace in glorious shades of purple. Emma then worked with me to create a big skirted, sweetheart neckline dress with cropped lace sleeves, under which I wore a giant cream petticoat.

I bought my shoes first - also in purple, Irregular Choice's Whiskers. They were limited edition so I had to decide quickly! I found the hair accessories on Folksy, butterflies for me and dragonflies for my bridesmaids. The fluffy shrug was via Ebay, and the Zelda necklace was from Etsy seller TheLittleSaint (along with Mark's Triforce tiepin!)

GROOM'S ATTIRE | We found Mark's suit quite by accident. We were shopping in Bluewater, and he popped into Reiss 'just to have a look'. When he came out wearing a suit that looked like it was made for him, I got a little teary, and we just knew it was the one! He originally wanted a blue suit, but we thought that might clash a little with the purple dress. In the end, the charcoal grey suit with the subtle blue check was the perfect compromise.

The tie and pocket square were from T M Lewin, and the shoes were from Barker - with funky Paul Smith socks underneath.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We didn't want anything too soppy, so stuck to picking one of the standard civil ceremonies. The one we chose had a lot of emphasis on 'individuality', something definitely very important to us. We had two readings. My mum read some quotes from Einstein, with her being a Doctor of Chemistry and me working in scientific editing, it seemed apt! Later, my brother did a solemn reading of Rick Astley's most famous tune. It was definitely an ice breaker, with much laughter, which is exactly what we wanted.

Music was so difficult, we're both really big music fans but just couldn't decide. Again, we didn't want anything traditionally soppy, as we don't think that's an accurate reflection of us. In the end, I walked in to the instrumental part of Plainsong by the Cure, we had Pulp and Blur during the signing, and we walked out to David Bowie's Let's Dance - and dance down the aisle we did!

This pickiness over music extended to the reception, where we decided rather than spending money on a cheesy DJ, we would create our own playlist. Every guest was also welcome to choose a song to add to the list. The criteria were something you could dance to, and nothing too cheesy, please. (I banned the likes of Dirty Dancing). It took a few months to build the playlist, and we were still finishing it the day before the wedding! We wanted something for everyone, so we went right through from the 50s to present day, with big nods to our favourites of 80s synth and 90s indie (and even a metal half hour). I think we pulled it off.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Originally I was only going to have my young cousin as a bridesmaid, but I ended up choosing two close friends too. I was quite glad of the moral support, and the contributions to all of the DIY, especially the amazing painted tealight jars! I knew I fancied something a bit different for their dresses, and the white dresses from White Stuff with flowers, butterflies, dragonflies and bees seemed to fit right in with the theme. My dressmaker made some changes to the dresses to suit each of the ladies, and used some of my dress material for the sashes. I told them they could choose their own cardigans and shoes, and they wore bee/dragonfly necklaces, with the dragonfly hair clips. Definitely coordinated!

My little bridesmaid wore a white dress from Debenhams with a mauve fluffy shrug ,and some amazing sparkly shoes from John Lewis that frankly, I was jealous of. She also had sparkly butterflies in her hair.

THE FLOWERS | I objected to spending a lot of our minimal budget on fresh flowers that I wouldn't see after the day. So, I sourced mine and the bridesmaids' bouquets of wooden tulips and daffodils from a local seller based in Covent Garden market. A friend and I put the bouquets together one afternoon.

For the centrepieces, my parents and Mark and I bought several bunches of tulips, daffodils and irises from our local supermarkets, and then bridesmaid Caz helped me arrange them in the marble painted jars the day before. I think they suited the general relaxed vibe of the day.

THE CAKE | As a bit of an amateur baker, I originally had wild visions of making the cake myself. Stupid idea. Instead, my mum's colleague Judith kindly offered to make us the cake, having done a fair few wedding cakes in her time. We were indecisive and a little bit greedy, so ended up with four different flavours - red velvet, lemon, pistachio and rose, and dark chocolate and violet. Plus a Totoro bride and groom cake topper - why not? Judith even made icing daffodils and bees from scratch.

My dad made us the amazing tree-style cake stand, based on a tutorial I found on the internet, but with a few tweaks of his own. It is now sitting proudly in our flat.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Being on a low budget, we initially weren't sure about having an official wedding photographer. By the time we decided it was actually quite important, some of our favourites were already booked up. We found Marianne's website and had a good feeling about her work immediately, as her couples looked simultaneously lovely while clearly having fun. We're both quite unphotogenic, in that we're very awkward when a camera is pointed at us and generally pull unflattering expressions (our best Chandler impressions, as Mark puts it). Marianne's 'photo ninja' style was therefore perfect for us, and I'm still amazed at all the expressive shots she got of the day (and night!). She's also absolutely lovely and we both felt relaxed around her, which was very important to us.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We couldn't really decide on one theme, so the wedding was more of a mishmash of things we like. The spring theme was prevalent in the flowers, brightly coloured bunting that was punched out of card and then sewn onto ribbon, the marbled vases and painted jars for candles, and some of the bridal party accessories. I also punched out coloured circles and tulips for confetti, and handed out rainbow bubbles.

Mark and I are both big fans of Belgium and its excellent beer selection, so we decided we wanted our invitations to be in the form of beer mats! A lovely friend of ours designed them, even with some writing in Flemish on the front. We used the leftovers as coasters on the tables, and printed the front design as labels for the beer bottle candle holders. We also wanted a few snaps in St Pancras with the Eurostar in the background (particularly as we were going back to Belgium for the minimoon).

We also portrayed our love of videogames with some Zelda-related accessories, a treasure chest for a card box, and I made pixel heart biscuits for favours.

Other miscellany included Nigel the treat donkey (originally from the hen do, but we thought his rainbow appearance fitted in well with the colour scheme), purple butterfly chalkboards and a colouring in poster in place of a guestbook. The latter seemed to keep many people occupied, and is now hanging up in our spare room as a lovely reminder of the day.

A friend of a friend, another Emma, kindly offered to help out as day of coordinator, and that really took some of the pressure off. The venue looked beautiful, I couldn't have done it better myself.

I had my hair done by my local hairdresser, I knew I definitely didn't want a big elaborate updo but something that suited the dress, and she nailed it. I did my make up myself after a swanky makeover at Space NK.

THE HONEYMOON | We went on a minimoon to Ghent, Belgium, as we just wanted a few days of downtime after the wedding in a place we were familiar with. It was just what we needed. We stayed in an absolutely amazing B&B with hosts who really made us feel at home.

The plan is for a trip to Sardinia later in the year for some sunshine and sea, and America for our first anniversary.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Claire: Getting to chat to my American friend Sara (who unfortunately couldn't make it) via video link while getting ready. Being 25 minutes late.. whoops. My brother Rickrolling everyone at the ceremony. Exiting the ceremony room grinning our faces off. Mother of the bride giving a speech complete with props. Running on to the dancefloor on a frequent basis because another great song had come on. Everyone telling me they'd never seen me so smiley before. Overusing the words 'husband' and 'wife'. Holding hands through most of the ceremony. Getting my dad on the dancefloor (incredibly rare). The bride apparently being 'drunk' and therefore entertaining...

Mark: I think my most memorable moment was seeing Claire walking down the aisle, it really hit home at that point that we were getting married and all the stress and hard work that led up to that moment was lifted from my shoulders. I took one look at Claire and realised I don't need anything or anyone else in the world as long as I'm with her.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Claire: Don't stress about the little details too much and always accept any offers of help! Remember to enjoy the day as it really does speed past. And make sure you eat enough so you don't end up accidentally drunk (ahem)! Stop worrying about how you will look on the day, because everyone looks great when they are that happy.

Mark: Always make sure there is a bridesmaid / maid of honour who will be there for the bride, as I soon realised, as much as I wanted to help, there was only so much the groom can get involved with and that support is really needed.

Also don't make your own wedding cakes, sounds like far too much hassle, after seeing what went into ours.
