Rustic Pastel Floral Spring Wedding | Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

Carly and Stuart tied the knot on the 12 th April 2014 at Roman Camp House Hotel, Scotland. They wanted a wedding day which was rustic with a soft Spring pastel feel.

I adore the florals at this wedding, from the cherry blossom on the trees to the bouquets and Carly's pretty hair style. The bridesmaids donned gorgeous pink dresses and much of their décor was hand crafted.

Carly looked so beautiful in a lace dress with pink sash and lace edged veil, while Stuart looked dashing in a kilt. Such a beautiful day.

Thanks goes to the amazing Neil Thomas Douglas for sharing his imagery with us today.

THE PROPOSAL | We were on a holiday of two parts - we had spent an amazing 3 days in Prague before travelling to Italy to visit friends and travel the Amalfi Coast. While staying on a working farm in Furore we had decided one day to take a long walk down to the coast. At one point we thought we were lost so Stu sent me off to look for signs along the path. When I returned Stu was standing on a rock which was jutting out over the cliff edge and I was standing on a rock above him. He then very nervously handed me the ring and muttered something along the lines of "ehhhh I don't know how to do this", before trying to put the ring on the wrong hand. I think had the scenery and setting been less spectacular I might have given him in to trouble for his poor choice of words...

THE VISION | I hate anything too clean and poised looking so was keen for the whole day to have a rustic feel. I wanted the day to follow a vibe of 'spring fete' but with a very obvious Scottish feel. I was keen to use pastel colours to reflect the soft spring vibe.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | The planning wasn't particularly difficult - Stu and I agree on a lot of things and our taste can very quite similar. I gave him the task of looking for a band - while I did the rest..

BUDGET |We didn't set a budget however our wedding came to much less than we had imagined - this was due to a variety of things such as our choice of venue, the fact I made a lot of the features and just general good choice of bookings. Every person we booked to be involved in our wedding was genuine, passionate about their job and keen to make our day as easy as possible. My feeling was also that these are the people that won't take the piss when it comes to costing.

THE VENUE | I had no idea where to start when it came to the venue. I became frustrated that a lot of venues which were charming outside, would often be very corporate inside. On the flip side, anywhere I fell in love with for its quirky feel, often turned out to be run down and almost unclean inside. I love old buildings, but often they have small rooms inside and I really didn't want a marquee. Stu's mum obviously understood my very picky specification and somehow managed to stumble across Roman Camp House Hotel. Stu and I both loved it - beautiful grounds, charming interior and even and two peacocks roaming about on site. As luck would have it, it also turned out to have the nicest staff and the most amazing wedding catering I have ever tasted.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | For the dress I knew I wanted simple and lace but other than that I had no idea. Accessories - flowers and soft colours. I had actually thought I wanted Veronica Lake style vintage hair however after finding the dress and cultivating the theme, it became clear a more relaxed floral vibe would be more appropriate.

I have to add a bit in here to do with hair and make up. I had initially decided to do my own makeup as I am fussy about what I like however realised this might make things more difficult the morning of the wedding. I book with Asteria Bridal following recommendations from friends. Jen and Pamela from Asteria were amazing. They are so talented and really are the best in their field by far. They were fun on the morning - didn't rush us and made every one of us feel amazing. My make up lasted all day and my hair was perfect.

FINDING THE DRESS | I only went to two different bridal shops - I could tell I would quite quickly get fed up of trying on dresses. Luckily I found my dress in the second shop. I won't name the shop as it was actually a bit of a surprise find. We had gone to this shop as had heard it had a good selection of MOB outfits. When we walked in I was deadly silent as all I could see were massive, diamante covered dresses. When I explained what I was looking for the woman said she had a dress out the back that she hadn't even hung up. When she brought it out I knew it was what I wanted. I think it would be possible to really over think the dress part and I know when I get into that headspace I tend to hate everything - so I bought it and ran.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Kilts, kilts, kilts. This was a fun part - picking the tartan and tweed. We wanted a very subtle tartan with a dark tweed jacket. We immediately agreed on the tartan and weirdly found out that the tweed jacket we had chosen was 'Edgar' tweed! Completely unintended!

THE READINGS & MUSIC | I knew all along that I wanted my sister to play the fiddle - she is extremely talented and I always feel proud when she plays. Stu and I aren't particularly mushy and didn't want anything too soppy so this worked out well. I let Rachel chose the piece to play and she chose the lovely and emotive 'Loch McLeod'. Stuart's oldest friend Jill did a reading for us - we left it up to her to decide what she wanted to do and we weren't disappointed. Jill made up her on poem and left us all in stitches - couldn't have been better.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My sister was always going to be my chief bridesmaid - we are very close so it was an obvious choice. My other bridesmaids were made up of my oldest friend Lynne who I've known since we were 8 and Amy and Fiona who are two of my closest friends having met them while at Stirling University.

The dresses were actually from H&M and were more bridesmaidy that I had intentioned. However they were perfect and tied in with the theme well. To be honest though I could have put them in bin bags and they would all have looked just as amazing.

THE FLOWERS | I looked around for ages at florists and had no idea where to go. One day Stu said to me 'why don't you just go to Sarah Jayne's?' and immediately it became the obvious choice - a local business that we have always used when looking for bouquets with a different touch. The meeting with the florist was really easy and she instantly understood what I was going for. They couldn't have done a better job of combining my rustic, soft theme with Scottish elements.

For the centrepiece flowers we decided just to use flowers from our parents' gardens. Not because of cost, just because we wanted it to have a personal feel. My mum planted a whole host of flowers in plenty time but unfortunately because we had such bad weather, they didn't all grow in time. It really wasn't a problem though - we used some flowers from mum's garden, flowers from Stu's mum's garden and they rest were bought from Morrisons the day before! They worked out really well and I'm so glad I did this as it added to the homey, rustic feel.

THE CAKE | My mum's friend made the cake - I had no involvement in this. My mum took my ideas to her friend and they produced the nicest, most delicate decorated cake I have ever seen.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | I stumbled across Neil when googling 'photographers with something different'. I hate getting my photo taken, especially posed ones and so wanted a photographer that would have a bit of fun on the day. We really couldn't have chosen a better photographer, from our initial meeting, to our engagement shoot, to the wedding day, it was clear that Neil was the right one for us. The photos have been amazing and I am even delighted with the 'couples shoot' which turned out so relaxed and natural looking. He also had fun at the wedding and had good banter with our guests - as a result people won't stop commenting about him.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | I knew I wanted to hand make a lot of things for the day - I'm not a very arty person but I LOVE making things and can get quite carried away. For the centrepieces I knew i wanted mismatched jars with candles, flowers and twine. I painted the inside of some jars to inject a bit of colour - unfortunately when we put the water and plant food in these jars the night before the wedding, we didn't realise that it would peel off all the paint!! Luckily I had enough twine and glue and so on the morning of the wedding while waiting for my hair to dry I glued more and more twine to the jars.

I also liked the idea of having an alternative comments book. Instead of a book I decided to copy an idea I had seen on Pinterest. I found a large jar and bought some colourful paper and asked people to write us a note and pop it in the jar - Message in a Bottle! My intention is to create a collage in a frame of all the notes people left us to hang up in our house - I hated the idea of people writing lovely messages in a book which will get put on a shelf and never looked at again.

I also decided to make a photo montage of Stu and I growing up. I love looking at photos and there are some absolute corkers of Stu and I in our awkward stages. For this I bought a frame, painted it the same colour as the jars and used twine to hang the photos up using tiny pegs.

For the favours I made tiny candles in jam jars for the women and filled the jam jars with Whisky or Rum for the males. I kind of feel like the girls lost out here but I was quite proud of my homemade candles. I also bought luggage tags and printed each person's name on one side, with a funny quote on the other. As a wee additional favour, my parents took photos of the flowers in their garden and made little keyrings for the guests - keeping in with the spring, floral theme.

Oh and another thing which was homemade was the bunting - Stu's mum and I bought random bits of fabric and attached triangles to twine and ribbon. This was really Stu's mum who did this - I think I attached about 7, while she did the other 250 triangles...

THE HONEYMOON | Following the wedding we spent 3 days in Pitlochry - a quiet but beautiful village. We wanted to be able to relax after the wedding but had booked our main honeymoon to Thailand in November. This was too far away to wait so a small break to Pitlochry was perfect.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The day flew by and there were so many amazing moments but the main one was when I started to walk down the aisle and saw that Stu was holding back tears. This was unnerving and amazing in equal measures as in 8.5 years of being together, I have never seen Stu show this kind of emotion.

Another memorable moment was checking the time and realising that at 11pm the dance floor was still full of people who were having fun and hadn't stopped dancing all night. I don't think the dance floor was ever empty.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Have fun! Stu and I danced with our friends and family all night and I wouldn't have had it any other way. Also, accept that your shoes will get dirty, your dress will get ripped and your makeup will slide off your face towards the end of the night - all signs that you've had a good time.
