10 Things I Learned From My Hair Stylist

Sitting in your stylist's chair can be as informative as spending your day at the library. The joyous tears you shed (and sometimes not-so-joyous), the life lessons you learn, and the tips you gather all come with the hours-long experience - which sometimes ends up being an all day experience. Spending all that time with your hair stylist, you're bound to pick up some hair care tricks. And so we have! Team MDC recently went on a haircut frenzy and we've picked up some tips from one of our faves, stylist Anna Wiles, as well as a few other tips along the way!

1. How to curl hair with a flat iron.
While some of you may have already mastered this trick, the rest of you need to start practicing! Curling your hair with a flat iron will give you those perfectly tousled, natural-looking beach waves. Use in combo with L'Oréal EverStyle Texture Series Beach Spray for an "effortless" looking 'do.
Dry shampoo isn't just for "washing" your hair, ladies! Pump up the volume by blasting your roots with some Garnier Fructis Volume Extend Instant Bodifier Dry Shampoo and get your big hair on! Wiles always tells her clients to use dry shampoo on clean or dirty hair. "It's the easiest way to get that third-day-volume on the first," she says.
While change is good and experimentation can be fun, always keep a hairstyle in mind that works best for you and your maintenance level. If you don't like going to the salon every 4-6 weeks, a platinum blonde dye job probably isn't your best bet. But may we suggest going ombré?

4. DON
' T use conditioner on your scalp.
"I can always tell if people are using conditioner incorrectly - unless you're willing to rinse for a long time and like residue that can lead to dandruff (that's a big NO!) then you should only be using conditioner from mid-length to your ends," says Wiles.
Your hair basically turns into elastic once it's wet and using the wrong brush can cause serious breakage. Use a wide tooth comb or a wet brush to detangle without the tugging! Help untangle your locks pre-brush by using Kerastase Cristalliste Lait Cristal, a conditioner specifically formulated to detangle hair - and remember, mid-length to ends only!
It's no secret that bleaching or coloring your hair causes damage (not that it stops us)! That's why it's important for your hair to retain moisture by treating it to a weekly hydrating mask like Pureology Hydrate Hydra Whip.
Strip that mellow yellow mess out of your locks and use purple shampoo to cool down unwanted gold or brassy tones. Try Matrix So Silver Shampoo to really illuminate highlights!
"If you want volume, you need to dry hair up and away from the scalp. Or let's say you have a cute angled bob - you need to be drying everything towards your face," says Wiles

9. For curly hair, set the diffuser to low speed and high heat.
"And you only want to dry about 80 percent of it. If you go from wet to totally dry, that's frizzy business!" says Wiles.

10. Oh, and you
'll get over that breakup!
It's true - your stylist can accidentally turn into your therapist as well. Listen up for some friendly advice and get yourself together, girl!
