Fun Filled Peachy Country Barn DIY Wedding

Fun Filled Peachy Country Barn DIY Wedding

via

I have had the pleasure of being a guest myself at today's venue and The Priory in Hertfordshire is just the most beautiful setting for a countryside wedding. So it's no surprise that WWW readers Sarah and Daniel chose to marry there on the 23 August 2014.

They hoped to achieve a fun filled countryside fete atmosphere at their wedding, which they did by providing live music and games for their guests.

I so love the peachy lush florals, rustic home made décor and quirky kitsch ice cream van.

Perhaps one of the most radiant brides I have ever featured, Sarah glowed in Cherish by Suzanne Neville, a romantic flowing gown which she teamed with simple pretty flowers in her hair. Wow.

Huge thanks to Binky Nixon Photography for sharing these divine photographs.

THE PROPOSAL | May 2012. Daniel was working in India for two weeks and had added a third week to the trip for sightseeing. Apparently he had been trying to find the 'right' moment to propose all year and decided to come home a week early to take me by surprise and propose. Unsuspecting, I'd just returned home from an 80 mile bike ride and was red, sweaty and in a very fetching lycra/ hoodie combo when I found Daniel at the door. He still proposed and after some reassurance he wasn't joking I said yes!

THE VISION | We wanted our day to be relaxed and fun-filled, with a country-fete feel during the day.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We booked our venue and photographer in 2013, and I started my dress search with a year to go. However, we didn't really start planning any of the finer details until we hit the year of the wedding.

THE VENUE | The Priory, Little Wymondley.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Cherish by Suzanne Neville. My lovely husband bought me a necklace and earrings to wear on the day, and I wore a bracelet my parents had given me for my 17th birthday. I felt a little silly in a veil so just had some fresh spray roses in my hair.

FINDING THE DRESS | I had a very clear image of what I thought I wanted before I started the search: an unstructured head to toe lace dress. I found lots of nice dresses like this, but none really stood out.

Still searching, I returned to a local bridal shop for a second time and noticed a dress that had been pulled out from the rail. It had a structured bodice, a very floaty skirt and only a small amount of lace on the arms and back. Despite it being nothing like the dress I thought I wanted, I thought it was beautiful, tried it on and loved it - search over!

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Daniel looked very dapper in a grey three piece suit made for him by the Cad and the Dandy.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had three readings; Sonnet 116, a slightly edited version of Song of the Open Road by Walt Whitman and, to finish on a whimsical note, The Owl and the Pussy Cat.

I walked down the aisle to Songbird by Fleetwood Mac. For our processional song we wanted to an upbeat, fun song, so chose A-punk by Vampire Weekend.

Our band, The Deloreans, did a great cover of Ho-Hey by the Lumineers for our first dance.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My younger sister was our bridesmaid - she wore a Ted Baker dress and looked absolutely beautiful.

THE FLOWERS | Catherine at Elworthy Flowers was amazing. She understood our vision exactly, and the flowers were absolutely gorgeous. She did a particularly brilliant job of transforming a slightly basic wooden gazebo into a ceremony space that looked beautiful.

THE CAKE | My extremely talented friend Kerry Baker (could there be a more apt name?) baked our cakes, with Paul, her finance tasked with transporting them from Chester in one piece. She even made our cake stand, which we later discovered was partly made from up-cycled Pringles tubes- genius!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Our photographer, Sally at Binky Nixon, was wonderful. She put us at ease entirely and captured some beautiful images. She even raced to the venue to give Daniel his trousers (in a rush we had packed the wrong pair the night before- whoops!)

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We wanted our personalities to be evident and it was important to use it felt like 'our' wedding, which meant we spent a lot of time DIY'ing.

I handmade all our invitations and thank you cards with a wooden stamping set and some washi tape for bunting. Small brown wages envelopes were turned into confetti bags, (with a little help from the stamping set!)

The flowers and tea-lights were arranged in decorated jam jars (we ate a lot of jam!) and old bottles found in my parents' garden. We bought mass quantities of hessian a few days before the wedding to make table runners (our rustic look thankfully meant the edges didn't need to be perfectly straight!)

We hired masses of bunting from Beautiful Bunting which looked so pretty and helped to make a vast space cosy and intimate.

We had a lot of fun putting together our 'time line': the story of our life together from meeting in 2009 to getting married in 2014, told through luggage tag notes and funny/silly/embarrassing photos. We also made a guest wall, printing off photos of all our guests and leaving them hand-written notes on luggage tags. We asked that they leave us a message in return.

We invested in a Polaroid camera and amassed some fancy dress in an old-fashioned suitcase. This was really fun and we've got some hilarious photos we will treasure.

Outside we had croquet, quoits, giant jenga, and apple-bobbing (we have a great video of my best friends looking pretty soggy). We also had a lot of takers for the sack race and the egg and spoon race.

Ice Baby, a gorgeous vintage ice cream van, provided some refreshment.

THE HONEYMOON | 10 days in Mauritius - bliss.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Walking down the aisle and seeing all our loved ones gathered to help us celebrate.

The speeches. My dad isn't a huge fan of public speaking so I didn't think he was going to do a speech - it was lovely when he stood up and delivered his surprise speech. Daniel also delivered an amazing speech - funny, touching, so memorable.

The final song- all our guests linking arms in a huge circle and dancing to 'Never Forget'- cheesy but lovely.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Try not to worry about anything before the wedding- everything will work out and even if things don't go quite to plan, it will be best day of your life!
