The Best Looks to Complement Matte Red Lipsticks

The quickest route to glam? Red lipstick. The red of the moment is decidedly matte (we're loving NYX Cosmetics Matte Lipstick in Pure Red). While it makes a statement all on its own, a red lip does need some support from the rest of your makeup and hair. Here are three ideas that will complete - but won't compete with - your red pout:

Work-Friendly: Light, Lashilicious Eyes + Sleek Pony

Makeup: Let your red lip stand alone - almost. Dust lids with a barely-there eye shadow. Try Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Zephyr. Skip the eyeliner, but pile on the black mascara. Try Lancôme Grandiôse Wide-Angle Fan Effect Mascara.

Hair: Using a natural bristle brush, gather your hair into a high ponytail, suggests Pureology Artistic Ambassador Natasha Sunshine. Secure it with an elastic band. Take a 1/4-inch piece of hair from your pony and wrap it around the base of your elastic. Secure with bobby pins and smooth flyways with a hairspray. Try Pureology Strengthening Control Zero Dulling Hairspray.

Date Night: Winged Eyeliner + Tousled Waves

Makeup: Black winged eyeliner and red lipstick is about as glamorous as it gets. Apply a pale, shimmery eye shadow all over lids. Then use a marker-like liquid eyeliner to line lashes from inner to outer corner, extending the line up toward your temple. Try YSL Eyeliner Effet Faux Cils. Finish with black mascara.

Hair: To make this retro-inspired makeup feel more modern, add rock-and-roll-inspired waves. Wrap large section of hair around a 1 1/2-inch barrel curling iron. Alternate the direction in which you wind each section, and vary the starting point (for example, curl one section three inches from your roots; another six inches down), says Sunshine. Break up the curls with your hands as you blast them with your blowdryer.

Party Ready: Bronzed Lids and a Half Pony

Makeup: Gray smoky eyes and red lips can look a little too done-up, but softly smudged, metallic brown shadow and a crimson pout say sultry. Use your your fingertip to apply a creamy eye shadow such as Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadow in Bad to Bronze from lash line to crease. Smudge it along your lower lashes too. Finish with two coats of black mascara.

Hair: Half-up hair feels dressy, but it's far from fussy. Tease hair from hairline to crown in one-inch sections. Then use a brush to smooth the front half of your hair into a high ponytail. Secure with an elastic band and wrap it with a section of your hair. Then smooth the sides with a styling wax, like Redken Water Wax 03 Hair Shine Defining Pomade.
