Laid Back Pastel & Lace Rustic Country Barn Wedding - Whimsical...

WWW reader Layla married Stuart at the beautiful Cripps Stone Barn in Gloucestershire. On a beautiful summers day they had a laid back vibe at their country barn location.

Stuart had one of the most dapper Groom looks I've seen, donning a blue Reiss suit, knitted tie and liberty print shirt. But lets not forget Layla too, who looked stunning in her Pronovias lace gown and flowing locks.

There were wool pom poms, lush blooms and smiles all round at this lovely day.

Thanks goes to John Barwood Photography for providing the immense images today.

THE PROPOSAL | Stuart whisked me off to Edinburgh for a couple of days. He proposed at the castle (beaut!) However, you can't get into the castle at night, so on reflection, it was in the car park!

THE VISION | Laid back, pastels and lace, sharing food and no formalities!

THE PLANNING PROCESS | I loved planning! I could have got more carried away if only we'd had an unlimited budget! We wanted something really laid back so didn't go over the top with planning every minute of the day for our guests. Having said this, Stuart had to keep questioning the relevance of my sudden ideas. I was the creative and he was the rational thinker.

BUDGET | We were keen to have wedding favours but couldn't afford to treat every guest to a 'good' present. I don't see the point in stretching yourself thinly, but then we couldn't afford to treat everyone to something expensive. Making something was also out of the question as we didn't have the time. So instead, we chose to make the place settings and issue a number on the back of each. After the speeches, we asked our grooms men to hold a raffle and draw three winners out of a hat. We chose three presents that the guests could enjoy and take away. Everyone got into the spirit when the numbers were being drawn (my Nan even got a kiss off of one of the Groomsmen!)

THE VENUE | We looked at different styles of venue but felt most comfortable with a barn wedding. The Cripps Stone Barn was beautiful and so secluded. It enabled us to have a laid back affair as it didn't require much decoration - the views were fantastic and are guests were all impressed by the look and feel of the place.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | A Pronovias 'Pergola' dress. I had the bolero adapted by a seamstress to make cap sleeves for the dress. I searched for ages for a hair piece. My dress had a lot of lace so I didn't envision having a veil, plus it felt too formal for the venue and the location was prone to windy weather - I didn't want a face full of veil during the photos! I found that most bridal accessories are silver. I had chosen gold accessories to complement my wedding band and the bridesmaid accessories but couldn't find any appropriate gold accessories anywhere. Plus, they tend to be very expensive. In the end I found a blue, art deco style clip in Anthropologie. I thought if I can't have gold, I may as well go for a contrasting colour, plus, it was my something blue.

FINDING THE DRESS | I could have tried on dresses forever, I absolutely loved the experience! I was very keen for a simple, lace fish tail style dress but again, as much as I loved it, it didn't feel right for the venue and the laid back feel of the wedding. In the end I found the dress in The Bridal Box in Oxford.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Light blue two piece from Reiss, three button jacket, navy blue knitted tie, blue small floral Liberty style print shirt, yellow socks and brown leather brogues. The best man and grooms men were wearing grey suits, white shirts and blue floral ties.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Music is very important to us. We had great fun exploring different music to play during the ceremony and throughout the meal. We wanted a mix of funk, soul and eclectic rock with some hip hop thrown in! I walked down the aisle to 'Toothpaste kisses' by The Maccabees and 'Hold on, I'm coming' by Sam and Dave to exit. Our first dance was too 'Your love gets sweeter' by Finlay Quaye. We were nervous about dancing but everyone got involved.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Dresses were by Darling. I wanted something pastel and understated. I got a few odd looks from older relatives when I said I wanted a short dress for them but I'm not keen on the traditional style.

THE FLOWERS | By Cotswold Blooms. I loved the flowers, she really understood the look I wanted. I wanted to draw in a mix of peaches, blues, pinks and purples. Mine was vibrant and the bridesmaids had a muted, pastel version of mine. I collected jam jars before the wedding and decorated them with lace and twine for the centrepieces.

THE CAKE | Was made by Stuart's lovely Mum, Sharon. She is a food technology teacher and makes amazing cakes but had never taken on a wedding cake before. We were really excited when she offered, it means so much more to have contributions from friends and family and she did an amazing job!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Our photographers were the best! We cannot recommend them enough. John and Soph from John Barwood Photography are a married couple that work together on the day. I was really nervous about the photos (I hate having my photo taken!) whereas Stuart loves it. They pay so much attention to detail, not just in their photographs but in the way that they communicate with you before the day, nothing was too much trouble and they really helped to make the day as relaxed as it was. My favourite moment was when they whisked us outside to take a photo because the lighting and clouds looked amazing. Just having that moment to ourselves, away from it all was perfect.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | I found some double sided frames from Ikea for our table numbers. I printed numbers and the menu and displayed them in these. I also spent months making pom poms! I'm a little bored by bunting and tried to make paper pom poms but they were a disaster (and hard to store before the day). In the end I bought, peach, pink, purple and white wool for the pom poms and attached them to twine as bunting.

THE HONEYMOON | Sardinia.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The venue was superb especially as we got lucky with the weather, so seeing our friends and families reactions to it was excellent. The speeches went down well and the food was excellent. John had found a good shot of the sunset which was at the top of the road from the venue. It was nice to have a few minute to ourselves away from the guests.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Planning isn't that bad but the earlier you plan things the better. You're not going to please all of the people all of the time so don't worry too much about it.
