8 Beauty Lessons We Learned From Grandma

8 Beauty Lessons We Learned From Grandma

via

Grandmothers are universally known for their nurturing ways, great cooking skills and smelly perfume. But, we like to think of them as the original fashion icons in our lives. Think about it: Our grandmothers honed their beauty skills in an age where curling irons and BOTOX did not exist. They managed to look flawless without many of the tools and techniques we rely on today ... that is talent. To honor these "pioneers of pretty" we call grandmothers, we compiled a list of the good ol' fashioned beauty tips they've bestowed upon us over the years.

1. Get Some Sleep, Young Lady

Those "all-nighters" you've been pulling will just NOT do at all. Not only will you be cranky and unpleasant in the morning, but you'll be causing some unnecessary bags under those eyes. Eight hours of sleep is the key to a perfectly pretty face.

2. Blue Eye Shadow Is Just Lovely, Dear

Granny's electric blue shadow may not be the most appealing look, but she had the right idea. A bold, blue lid can actually look fabulous when done right! Go for a cool, navy smoky eye paired with a pretty nude lip to make Grandma proud.

Whether it means feeding you banana bread until you burst or chasing you with syrup every time she hears you cough, Grandma's mission in life has always been to keep you the very picture of health ... literally. So, it's no surprise the woman has been the biggest endorser of bright, flushed cheeks for as long as you can remember. And, we gotta say, Grandma is definitely onto something there. Nothing gives your face life and healthy color quite like a little blush on the apples of your cheeks.

That scolding at the dinner table that used to drive you nuts is actually some of the best beauty advice Grandma could give you. Excessive slurping (and any sort of sipping for that matter) could eventually lead to prune-y, wrinkles around the mouth. Although you thought her "no-slurping" rule was based on general etiquette, Granny's mission was more long-term. And, wrinkles are NEVER to be taken lightly.

We all know Grandma doesn't do well with electrical beauty devices. She keeps it "old school" and swears by velcro rollers ... and we love it. As it turns out, velcro rollers are a lazy girl's dream, as they deliver instant body and fullness without all the drama of hot tools and irons. Yes, please.

Your grandmother wouldn't be caught dead in public without a bright coral or red lip and neither should you. This lipstick principle has been passed down from generation to generation since the days of Cleopatra - and with good reason. Nothing sends your self-esteem soaring quite like a bright, vibrant pout, so listen to Granny and throw on that lipstick!

OK, so we don't call it "cold cream" so much as we call it "moisturizer" these days, but you get the idea. That smelly, thick white paste that your grandmother slathered on her face every day and night is actually what kept her looking lovely and youthful for so long. Follow in her footsteps and keep your skin supple and moisturized and those wrinkles won't be knocking on your door for a long, long time.

Unfortunately, you can't stop time in its tracks or rewind the aging process in any way. However, if you've learned anything from Grandma, it's that women are like a fine wine in that they get better with age. Beauty withstands all decades of life if you own your look and make confidence your primary accessory. Work it, honey. Always work it.
