The Offbeat Bride: Courtney, Baker

Her offbeat partner: Jason, Retail

Date and location of wedding: Pinedale Farm, Orillia, ON, Canada - October 3, 2015

Our offbeat wedding at a glance:

I chose a Medieval feast wedding theme and Jason happily went along with it! I'm a big history and fantasy nerd, so we felt it was a fitting theme that would be easy to pull off on a tight budget.

Tell us about the ceremony:

Our ceremony included parts from The Princess Bride, a poem from Neil Gaiman, and drinking whisky out of a Scottish quaich. It was a lot of fun to put together and Offbeat Bride helped a ton. The ceremony included zombies, Mordor, and mention of a TARDIS and kept everyone laughing.

Tell us about your reception:

The reception was very informal with a buffet of seasonal vegetables and a whole roast pig that we cooked and carved ourselves. It was self-catered with lots of help from our parents. For the decor, my friend Jessica cut and sanded wooden discs for my tea light lanterns and we arranged them with assorted bits of nature we found on the farm. We hung plastic swords and shields inside the event tent too.

What was your most important lesson learned?

My biggest challenge was organization. I am the least organized person of all time and it would have helped a lot if I had kept important details together in a binder or a notebook in the months leading up to the wedding. Luckily, Jason helped with a lot of the detail work so that really helped things go smoothly.
