For Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans we partnered with Vans for an exclusive apparel collection for women and men, loosely based on the colors of our sneaker selection. We love the result and hope you do, too. In fact we were so impressed during the prototype-vetting process and seeing the finished products, we got Vans' designer Vince Martinez on the horn to ask him about the collection piece by piece.

For this project, I was told it was a Pop-In Shop, which I was familiar with, so I got excited to do something extra creative. There weren't strict parameters, just to tie back to the footwear and bring the design to life. It wasn't a free-for-all, but I was allowed to do what I do. Usually I'm told, "Here's your budget." And I work with that. For this, there was no budget. I was like, OK, I'm just going to take everything to the next level: use the most expensive fabrics, work with the factories, make sure the hand-feel is good. All those things that I normally do, but I was able to give a lot more pushback.

The shirtdress here is one of our staple silhouettes, a pocket shirtdress. I did leather trims, neck taping, paid attention to all the details. I also elevated the fabric-it's a higher-end cotton blend than we normally use, with more poly in it and a little more of an open weave-and lined it with lightweight jersey, since this will be in some cold-weather Nordstrom stores. I wanted to make something you could wear with maybe just one layering piece, and you'd be good outdoors. I didn't want it to feel like a sweater, but I want her to know there's something between her and the cold weather. We're a Cali company, so I think about lighter-weight stuff usually. It was cool to work on something heavier.

This ties back to our color palette, with the port and navy. What I did here was use our heavyweight flannel material, brushed it and washed it for a really nice feel. I added leather trims and elevated buttons. The T-shirt underneath is our ringer shirt, a classic, but a different fabric with more modal in it, and then pinching the fabric and doing a super light screenprint on it. It makes it look less commercial. You know it's Vans, but once you feel it you understand the love that went into it.

The sweatshirt here: we used a great fleece and did a tonal print on the sleeves. Then I enzyme-washed it and really beat it down. When the girl picks it up, it's not heavy-and you see here she has her arms crossed, but she's not going to feel the print on her hands. When someone touches her they'll notice it all feels part of the garment. The hat, I sourced the net fabric, it's a very open weave, and I put a mesh backing there to hold it together. The strap is all leather with a matte buckle that blends in. The front patch is leather as well.

The tonal checkerboard fleece I felt was not too loud but loud enough. I wanted to do a different version than the other checkerboard fleece I did, which was really contrasty. I love the way this outfit looks. The socks and the velvet shoes make it pop, that black, black, black and then this beautiful color.

I wanted to do a staple work shirt. I took a heavy flannel, had it brushed and washed, and used horn buttons to give it a classic late-'90s, early-2000s feel, that workwear look, street inspired. But without any crunchiness. The modern, elevated feel happening right now is about softness.

Raglans are huge sellers for us, but weirdly we've never done a checkerboard three-quarter-sleeve raglan. So I did one. The checkerboard ties back to the shoes, and our print team executed this really nicely.

This leather purse came out amazing. You can hold it as a clutch or use the chain strap. It's all leather, with embossing inside. I heat-sealed the seams inside so there effectively are no seams. And then we did a suede-leather combination on the front. The navy leather is suede, the other leather is port. I added all-leather trims and grommets.

I love this shot. It's really what Vans is, with the checkerboard woven and the black-and-white ringer. Classic Vans, but updated.

She's wearing a tonal checkerboard dress with a black pocket, which again ties back to the color palette of some of the shoes in the shop, with that navy color incorporated. And he's wearing a debossed fleece. You look at it and it looks like a black fleece. You get closer, and you can see the checkerboard, and you realize how it ties into Vans heritage. It's iconic and you get it right away, but you have to get close. My whole idea going into this was to take fabrications you'd see in designer clothes, boutique clothes, and authentically make that part of the Vans world. I made pieces I wanted people to notice and talk about.
