How to Go One Week Without Washing Your Hair

How to Go One Week Without Washing Your Hair

via

We've gotten into the great hair-washing debate and have dissected this conversation starter from practically every angle. Trust us, this topic is BIG at Makeup.com HQ.

And, at the end of the day, the argument stands at a stalemate as there are still individuals out there who can't bring themselves to go a day without scrubbing their strands. Just the thought of oily roots and messy, unmanageable locks sends them running for the the nearest shampoo bottle.

For all you avid hair-washers, we have a challenge for you. What if we had some tips to ease you into the life of a once-a-week washer? And not just any tips. We consulted with Los Angeles-based stylist, and member of the Kerastase Education Team, Craig Wcislo to compile a guide on how to survive a week without washing your hair. Yes, a week.

Invest in a GREAT Dry Shampoo

This is the stuff of Hair Care 101. If you haven't heard of dry shampoo, you need to come out from under that rock you've been living under and read this, stat! Oh, and pick up a great dry shampoo while you're at it.

Wcislo recommends an ultra-light spray like Kérastase Powder Bluff or a powder-based formula like L'Oréal Professionnel Fresh Dust to keep oil under control. "Use a powdered product to absorb the oils in your scalp and give the hair lift," says Wcislo. "A great secret is to spray a little dry shampoo on your hair and scalp the day you wash your hair, and while it's still damp. Putting powder down before it gets oily, preps the hair for an extra day or two of wear before you need to even think about it being dirty."

Invest in an Even Greater Dry Conditioner

Now this tip is not as obvious, but a quality dry conditioner is just as important as a quality dry shampoo. Yep, we said it: JUST as important. See, dry shampoos are great for keeping oil at bay, but sometimes they can work against you and cause buildup and dryness in the hair. No, thank you!

A dry, leave-in conditioner is your saving grace- it prolongs your hairstyle and keeps it clean-looking while retaining moisture. Wcislo recommends a dry-shampoo-conditioning hybrid like the Shu Uemura Art of Hair Color Lustre Dry Cleaner. "It's a dry shampoo/conditioner that leaves the hair feeling silky and clean, and makes the oil magically disappear."

Use the Right Heat-Styling Products

Many of us who swear by heat-styling feel the need to wash and start all over again every time we use a different tool. Not only is this terrible for your hair, but it's also totally unnecessary.

"If you're a re-styling addict-you've got a blowout one day, flat-ironed the next day and curls on another day-I recommend using Kérastase L'Incroyable," says Wcislo. "The micro-waxes in it allow you to change your hair from straight to curly by simply reheating and re-styling-no need to re-wash and/or blowdry."

When You're On Your Last Leg, Go for the Updo

OK, you're on Day 7 and no amount of dry shampoo or conditioner can hide the oil that's peeking out of your roots and causing your hair to lay slick on your head.

"On the last day before washing, think about treating your hair to a day-long conditioning experience," suggests Wcislo. "Apply some Kérastase Elixir Ultime or Shu Uemura Art of Hair Essence Absolue generously, starting mid-shaft and working through to the ends. Pull your hair back into a ponytail and twist it into a bun for the day. Look chic and when you wash the next day, experience how conditioned and healthy your hair feels."
