If only a drugstore beauty blender could give your skin a runway-ready glow befitting Kendall or Gigi. Unlikely, but if anyone possesses such skill at his fingertips, it's Patrick Ta. The self-taught celebrity makeup artist was discovered on Instagram (@patrickta), where he honed his craft by studying other beauty professionals. Since then he's become the go-to guru for the Kardashians and other famous Hollywood inhabitants looking for a natural, but enhanced look.

As global ambassador for luxury skin care line La Mer 's foray into foundation, Ta visited our Nordstrom flagship store. We took that opportunity to talk with him about how to create a fresh face and his favorite techniques for turning anyone into a selfie star.

Tell us about La Mer's new products.

I'm so excited for the new foundation line. It's makeup that has skin care in it. But also, it's medium to full coverage, so it's so buildable. I work on clients that love a full, glamorous look and girls that loves an effortless glow. With these three products, you can add more if you want full coverage. Or if you want even less you can mix it in with our Renewal Oil to break down the product a little so that it lays more smoothly on the skin.

What is so special about La Mer's skin care formula, which is found in the foundation line?

All La Mer products have the Miracle Broth in them, which is made from sea kelp that is harvested daily. They never cut the root, just the top so it grows four feet a day. And that's fermented into this Miracle Broth that helps with anti-aging, with redness, reducing the appearance of fine lines and locking in moisture.

Amazing. So how are you using these products to create your signature flawless skin?

For an everyday look, I take 1-2 pumps of the foundation and mix it with the Renewal Oil. Mix it on the back of your palm with your fingers. Put the excess foundation on your fingers on your face, so you don't waste this product. We have a brush, too, but I like to apply the foundation in a bunch of different ways: with the brush, with my fingers, even with a beauty blender, depending on the areas. Especially around the under eye, I like using my fingers because I want to press and have the product melt into the skin rather than having the product lay right on top of it. Around the perimeter of the face I'd use a brush. If you need extra blending, if you're looking for a seamless look, I'd press the beauty blender around those areas.

What are some techniques you have for achieving a flawless everyday look?

Starting with your skin care is everything. Girls have to wash their makeup off before they go to sleep. I feel like a lot of girls just wipe their face and call it a day. But if you wear makeup, use a makeup wipe and then use a cleanser to wash it off so that your skin can breathe at night. Plus you always need fresh, moisturized skin in order to have your makeup looking dewy and healthy. Without a perfect canvas, no matter how much foundation you put on, it can't cover your imperfections and achieve perfect skin. So I recommend investing in skin care instead of trying to mask it with other things. Other things help, but invest in skin care.

Tell us some trends that you're playing with for fall.

Paris Fashion Week's runway looks were very dewy and luminous, but they were playing with bold eyes and bold lips. You can have makeup look natural but you can still have a glamorous effect to it by popping the eye or lip while having your skin be really bare.

I love using cream shadows because I think they look expensive, they look rich, they bring in color. It's great because it melts into the skin rather than laying on top of it. And depending on what my client is wearing, I love when makeup matches the outfit. I know that's probably an old thing, but in order to make a look come together, if you're playing with color, the outfit has a lot to do with it. Say you're wearing an all-nude ensemble, it's beautiful to have bronze lips, it's very monochromatic. Whatever I have on the cheeks, I like on the lips. Sometimes I put my blush on my eye crease.

Patrick Ta's La Mer face primer: or how to get beautiful everyday skin courtesy of the celebrity makeup artist.

  1. I always cleanse the skin before I apply any foundation. You want the makeup to look as flawless and bright as possible. The Cleansing Micellar Water is great because it removes anything gently. It's also great if you're on the go and don't have time to wash the face.
  2. This is my all time favorite product: The Concentrate. I've been using this day and night. It has changed the texture of my skin. It is my number one La Mer product. It makes your skin so smooth, moisturized. It reduces pore size. and is the product that has the most Miracle Broth in it.
  3. Now for the La Mer foundation. I personally always like to mix shades to find an exact match. I'm just going to apply the foundation with my fingers and then blend it out with brush. This foundation brush is great. It's kind of shaped like a beauty blender, and it can get into all the corners that a normal brush can't. Be sure to get under the chin, so you don't have a floating head!
  4. For concealer, I like to find a shade that's one to two lighter to bring dimension into the face. I put a little underneath the eyes, sometimes down the nose and on the cupid's bow.
  5. And then apply a little bit of powder to the T-zone. I like to leave the perimeter powderless so that it's glowy and luminous.
