Velvet for Days-and Nights

Velvet for Days-and Nights

A favorite formal fabric during the holiday season, velvet started showing up even earlier this year, namely in September. During Fashion Week Spring 2017, the cloth was a head-to-toe favorite among the world's most stylish ladies, who wore it in a variety colors, during the day, through city streets. Fulfilling unlikely fashion icon George Costanza's wish, it seems it is now societally acceptable-even embraced by the femmes du monde-to drape oneself in velvet. So what are you waiting for?

Formality is another fashion rule that's readily being broken, and wearing velvet further blurs the high/low divide by injecting luxury into the everyday. Eveningwear continues to influence daywear: we see furs, lace, embellishments, jewel tones and rich fabrics worn to the office or to the store with denim and tees.

As always, street style during Fashion Week serves as a bellwether for the season's trends. Some of our favorite velvet looks below show how the style stars are wearing the fabric-without it looking like drapery.

Burnout velvet

There's no question that velvet is a heavy fabric. One way that designers break up its plush density is by imposing a pattern on it. Burnout, or devoré, velvet is a process that "devours" part of the fabric, leaving it sheerer in places while creating patterns. During Fashion Week, burnout velvet dresses and shirts were spotted in combos that downplayed the regal-looking fabric, like pairing it with denim or boots to play up its relaxed '90s vibe.

Velvet pants

We can't think of a style we're more excited about this winter than supersoft velvet pants. Especially in wide-leg cuts, these fluid trousers provide a warm sense of luxury. Pair them with a simple button-up blouse, a turtleneck or tee to keep from clashing too many colors or patterns. But if you have an entire velvet suit, don't be afraid to wear it: this is the season to swath yourself in the sumptuous fabric.

Velvet jackets

A dapper way to top off even the most casual outfit, the velvet jacket lends a formal, gentlemanly air to everyday attire. Basic black or jewel tones-like amethyst, ruby and emerald-were the most popular shades seen at Fashion Week. The jacket is a cozy yet elegant layer to pair down with jeans or up with a pleated skirt. Its versatility and warmth make it a practical-and dare we say must-have?-addition to your closet.

Velvet shoes

One of the easiest and most prevalent places to incorporate velvet is on footwear. Brightly colored booties, pretty pumps and funky platforms all showed up this season. Again, jewel tones were the dominant hues.

Booties are a playful place to wear velvet. While the fabric makes the shoe a bit dressier, when paired with culottes, raw-hem jeans or even miniskirts, it simply adds a pop of color and texture.

Platforms and pumps also play up the fabric's feminine qualities. There's a vintage feel to velvet on heels. Pairing these styles with a sock-chunky or sheer-keeps them looking current.
