How To Propose During The Holidays: A Very Festive Proposal

via

There is nothing quite like a declaration of love and commitment during the festive period. Whether you're surrounded by family for Christmas, you've whisked your partner away on a romantic holiday getaway or it's an extravagant surprise on New Year's Eve, you just can't beat a holiday proposal.

Christmas proposal
What a beautiful way to begin the festive season and welcome your one and only into your family (forever). Here are some cute ideas for how you could propose:

  • The stocking filler: Pop the ring into her/his stocking and wait until they dig deep inside and fish it out. When they turn around you could be kneeling behind them with a heartfelt speech at the ready.
  • Treasure hunt: A really personal way to propose to your loved one! Create a treasure hunt around the house with little clues leading them to the next spot and then eventually to a ring hanging like a Christmas ornament or hidden somewhere clever in the house. Perhaps your pooch could run out with the ring box attached to its collar. Make the clues about you or your loved one (or both) for an extra touch of romance (and the 'Awwww' effect).
  • Wrap it up: For a simple proposal wrap the ring up and put it under the tree. Once the whole family is gathered you'll be able to tell your beloved how much they truly mean to you in front of all of your closest family. Who doesn't love an audience?
  • Pudding surprise: Cook a traditional fruit pudding (soaked in brandy) and hide the ring inside her/his slice. Make sure you warn them that there might be traditional silver sixpence hidden in the pudding - so she/he doesn't lose a tooth in the process.
  • Christmas lights: Why not say it in Christmas lights! Take your love on a drive around the neighbourhood to see the Christmas lights, stopping finally at a house (maybe yours or a kind neighbour) that has WILL YOU MARRY ME strung up in Christmas lights. What a surprise.
  • A cracker Christmas: Do some DIY this Christmas and create your own crackers with a twist. Hide the ring in the cracker and the proposal will go off with a BANG! You might even get a hilarious joke or personal titbit in there too.
New Year's Eve

Excitement is already at an all-time-high at this time of year, so you may as well make a good thing even better with a proposal! Whether it's at a themed NYE party, under the midnight fireworks or on a quiet beach by candlelight your proposal will be ultra romantic. We have some great ideas to start you off:

  • Drink it in: Why not go the tried and true method of putting the ring in a champagne glass during a delicious meal together. It's the classic move.
  • Party on: Involve your friends and family in the proposal by gathering them somewhere super secret to have a big old party and then midway through you can pop the question in the middle of everyone. Then they'll really have something to celebrate!
  • Climb high: Take a trek up a mountain or go for a walk in nature - it'll be both idyllic and private.
  • All aboard: Take a boat ride through the harbour or along a river. Perhaps there will be some well timed fireworks to add some sparkle to the occasion.
  • Fortune cookie: Create your own fortune cookie to crack open when the clock strikes twelve. Hide the ring (or a little love note) inside the fortune cookie for her to find when it's cracked open.
  • New year's resolution: Sit down together to write your new year's resolutions. Swap them and read what each other has. When you give yours to her ask her if she has the same one as you - write on it 'To Get Married To You'!

On holiday
You've booked the tickets and are about to set off on a romantic adventure together. So why not make this adventure even more special with a proposal?

  • Mystery flight: Shroud the whole holiday in mystery and don't tell your beloved where you're going. The excitement of the trip will have them on the edge of their seat the whole time. Guaranteed delight when all is revealed!
  • Create new traditions: Re-create a favourite holiday that you have both shared in the past. Perhaps you could create a new tradition for your future anniversaries or family holidays.
  • Your backyard: Why not be tourists in your own backyard and go on a holiday around your own city. You could even visit some special spots that hold memories from your time together thus far. No need to spend a whole heap of money when there are lots of activities you can do in your very own backyard.
  • Deserted beaches: Make a point of taking your loved one to a quiet, private beach or the top of a mountain. Profess your love surrounded by beautiful nature and not another soul in sight! If your future Mr/Mrs is more of an introvert they will love the low-key proposal.

They key to a memorable proposal is making sure it suits your loved one. Whether that is a big public proposal with a choreographed dance and marching band or on the couch in your tracksuit pants playing video games, make sure it fits with what they would like. Take them off-guard, but don't give them a reason to want to run for the hills. Trust yourself...you'll know what's best. Happy holiday proposing!
