TOMS Founder Blake Mycoskie on Giving Back | Nordstrom Fashion Blog

In the last decade, we've seen Charlize Theron, the pop star Pink and Jeff Bridges all shoeless on social media. One-for-one retailer TOMS launched A Day Without Shoes in 2007, creating an annual frenzy of bare feet photographed by socially minded celebs and normals alike. For A Day Without Shoes, TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie donated a pair of shoes to someone in need for every person who chose to walk without them for a day-and share a picture online. This year, Blake is turning his focus to his brand's other charitable efforts during One Day, on May 12, documented with the hashtag #standwithtoms.

We spoke with Blake about what One Day will accomplish and TOMS' considerable worldwide contributions.

How does One Day work?

Since our founding, TOMS has stood for one thing: to improve lives through business. For the past 11 years, we have done that through six unique gives: shoes, sight, safe birth, safe water, kindness and time. On one day each year, we have drawn attention specifically to children's health and education. This year, on May 12, we are broadening the conversation to focus on all our gives and encouraging our community to identify which one they relate to the most. It is time to let our actions show that "we are what we do." We are asking the TOMS tribe to help raise awareness for all the TOMS gives and inspire others to get involved and take action.

Tell us about the six areas you support during One Day.

It started with footwear because I was traveling in Argentina and noticed how many children were without shoes and how greatly it affected them. After seeing the positive impact we had on these communities because of these shoe gives, I considered how we could help provide people with other vital materials. Our product offering now includes shoes, eyewear, coffee, bags, backpacks and Apple watchbands. For every product purchased, TOMS will help a person in need. One for One.

  • Shoes, Red: TOMS has given over 70 million pairs of new shoes to children in need in over 70 countries.
  • Safe Water, Blue: TOMS Roasting Co. purchases have helped provide 400,000 weeks of safe water to people in need.
  • Sight, Green: TOMS has helped restore sight to 445,000 people.
  • Safe Birth, Purple: TOMS has supported safe birth services for 70,000 mothers.
  • Kindness, Orange: nearly 1 out of every 3 students, ages 12-18 in the United States, reports being bullied. TOMS has supported 44,000 youths by helping to prevent and respond to instances of bullying.
  • Time, Yellow: currently more than 1.2 billion people lack access to safe, reliable light sources. With the purchase of a TOMS Apple Watch band, one year of solar light is provided to a person in need.
How can people participate? Where do they get the pins?

We have created limited-edition pins to represent each of our six gives. We are offering them as a gift with purchase at selected Nordstrom stores. We also want to encourage people to choose a color and cause associated with their TOMS Give to Wear on May 12. Red for shoes, green for sight, purple for safe birth, blue for safe water, orange for kindness and yellow for time.

How does wearing a pin make a difference?

Our goal is to raise awareness for all the ways TOMS and our tribe work to make a difference. We want to encourage people to figure out which of our gives they feel most strongly about supporting and sharing why they Stand with TOMS.

Why did you get interested in social efforts?

I am a serial entrepreneur. I had an interest in business from a young age and started my first company when I was 19 years old. I truly love starting something from scratch and building it up to be successful. It was when I started TOMS in 2006 that I came to the realization that I was a social entrepreneur. I saw these children in need and knew it wasn't sustainable to rely on donations to help them, so I came up with the one-for-one business model. My initial goal was to help 250 kids in one small village in Argentina. I am humbled we have since been able to help over 70 million people globally.

Tell us about TOMS' Giving Trips.

Giving Trips are a unique experience that allows our employees and members of our TOMS tribe to understand firsthand the good we are doing. During these trips, we work with our Giving Partners to place shoes on children's feet or witness a person receive medical treatment for vision impairment. All full-time TOMS employees are eligible to go on a Giving Trip after their first year. It's so important to me that we all have the experience so everyone understands that the hard work they do daily is helping others in need.

How does social media help amplify the message?

Social media is such a big part of our success, because we are not like other companies who spend loads of money on advertising. Instead, our profits go directly to our give to help others. Because our customers are a huge part of our give, we look to our tribe to help us spread the word so we can continue to grow and use business to improve lives.
