New York City fades into last light, as seen from the Brooklyn Bridge. Every day the bridge carries 125,000 motor vehicles, 4,000 pedestrians, and 2,600 cyclists — but once, it only carried Emily Warren Roebling and a chicken. After her husband became sick during the construction of the bridge, Emily became the de facto chief engineer, and eventually was recognized as the driving force behind the bridge's completion. She was the first human across the bridge, and sitting in her lap in her carriage was a rooster, a symbol of good luck. (
