BEAUTIFUL DESTINATIONS

Castel Sant’Angelo, as stunningly beautiful as it is, has a complex history. Over nearly 2000 years, it has served as a mausoleum, a fortress, a hideaway, a museum, and is now a popular tourist attraction. First built to serve as the mausoleum of the Roman emperor and his family, the myth says that it was given its name when the Archangel Michael, who ended the Roman plague, appeared. In the 14th century, Castel Sant’Angelo took on the role of a military fortress connected to the Vatican through an elevated passageway, “Passetto di Borgo.” Now a museum dedicated to its storied past, one can not forget that it also served as a prison, haunted by the ghosts of inmates who have passed.
