Destroyed during Ivan the Terrible’s storming of the Kazan, the first iteration of the Kul Sharif was built back in the 16th century— the blue-domed mosque is considered a symbol of aspirations for the Tatar people. Along with a mosque that can accommodate 6,000 worshippers, the complex also contains a library, publishing house, and Imam's office. (
