Often a decent wedding DJ can be cheaper than hiring a wedding band . Wedding music is important to set the mood for each segment of the wedding day. The first step is to make sure that the venue does not require you to use their house DJ. If not then start to create a "Master list" this is where you list all the wedding DJ's in your area that you think may be in the running to play at your wedding. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to start compiling your list. Many cities will have an association of wedding groups, it is the "who's who" of premiere wedding vendors and entertainers. This way you can avoid those DJ's who are "bottom feeders" . They make up in cheap prices their lack of experience and professionalism. They are also not likely to be insured and many banquet facilities require the wedding DJ to have liability insurance.

Another area that people find disheartening when hiring a wedding DJ is that they get the bill and it is much more than what was quoted to them. Before hiring a DJ or other wedding musician ask about fees for microphones, lights, smoke machines, planning sessions and the like. Anything that you think they might would charge you for ask the question. One of the ways a lot of companies get over on the unsuspecting is when they charge fees for travel and setup. Now that you are aware you can make a more informed decision.

The one thing that you can be entirely certain of is that if a wedding DJ was difficult or not up to par you will be able to find out about it on the raves and rant type message boards. The rants and raves are generally more accurate since they are not ran like review sites. Real people, with real opinions are what you want to search for. Do not forget though that sometimes these are purely opinions of someone with an ax to grind but this is a viable option for helping to narrow down your list.

While there are some good DJ's in the club scene not all of them will be able to handle the rigors of being a wedding DJ. Many of these guys do not own a decent suit let alone a Tuxedo. You will want the DJ to reflect the dress style of the wedding guest. Also make sure that they have a good command of the English language and know how to behave in an appropriate manner. They may be a whiz at spinning but if they are being inappropriate or embarrassing they can bring the energy level of the reception to a stand still.

Finally steer clear of any Wedding DJ who says they will do the event using an iPod or other electronic device. These freeze often and this would be the worst thing that could happen during a good dance.
