How to Get a Cool Girl Bob (and Not a Mom Bob)

How to Get a Cool Girl Bob (and Not a Mom Bob)

Here at MDC, we are lucky enough to have a panel of experts to sound off on those topics that leave the everyday girl scratching her head. Today, for example, we asked hair guru Zachary Morad to shed some light on common mistakes we might be making with our hair color.

The bob haircut is quickly rising in the ranks as an ideal way to freshen up your look. We've seen so many of our favorite models and celebrities trade in their long locks for this chic, shorter 'do. However, many women dying to take the plunge are held back by the fear of getting the dreaded, "Mom Bob" (MB). I know you know the look I'm referring to, but I'll leave some clues along the way for those who can't quite picture it!

Avoid Long Layers

Long layers on a bob haircut will usually give you instant MB as they create a kind of diamond shape which is out-of-date and far from cutting edge. However, leaving your hair blunt or choosing super choppy, shagged layers are two ways to avoid this!

Give It Life -- with Limits

MBs tend to be driven by voluminous blowouts that deliver a rounded shape and possibly a little too much flip at the ends. Opt out of the traditional blow-dried look and try something super sleek and straight. Not a straight hair kinda girl? Wrap small random sections of hair around a ¾ -inch curling iron or wand. Shake out the curls and give them a spritz of some texturizing spray (I love Garnier Fructis De-Constructed Texture Tease Dry Touch Finishing Spray). Voila! You'll go from matronly to modern in minutes!

Add a Pop of Color

Another way to avoid the dreaded MB is to switch up your hair color to match your über-trendy new look. Try minor adjustments like baby lights around the face for dimension? You could even get a bit more daring with blush-tinted blond! Using modern color to enhance a bob is a sure fire way to avoid a matronly cut!

Accessorize

Having a cropped-cut can open up a whole new world of styling options. One of my favorite ways to switch it up is by accessorizing. Using fun hair accessories to embellish your hair is not only chic but also very on trend with the looks that we've seen on the runways in recent seasons. Try a feminine floral headband to dress your tousled waves or pin one side back with colored bobby pins!
